Multimodal Generative Models for Scalable Weakly-Supervised Learning

چکیده
Multiple modalities often co-occur when describing natural phenomena. Learning a joint representation of these modalities should yield deeper and more useful representations. Previous work have proposed generative models to handle multimodal input. However, these models either do not learn a joint distribution or require complex additional computations to handle missing data. Here, we introduce a multimodal variational autoencoder that uses a product-of-experts inference network and a sub-sampled training paradigm to solve the multi-modal inference problem. Notably, our model shares parameters to efficiently learn under any combination of missing modalities, thereby enabling weakly-supervised learning. We apply our method on four datasets and show that we match state-of-the-art performance using many fewer parameters. In each case our approach yields strong weakly-supervised results. We then consider a case study of learning image transformations—edge detection, colorization, facial landmark segmentation, etc.—as a set of modalities. We find appealing results across this range of tasks.

Semi-supervised Multimodal Learning with Deep Generative Models
In recent years, deep neural networks are used mainly as discriminators of multimodal learning. We should have large amounts of labeled data for training them, but obtaining such data is difficult because it requires much labor to label inputs. Therefore, semi-supervised learning, which improves the discriminator performance using unlabeled data, is important. Among semi-supervised learning, me...
متن کاملSemi-supervised Learning with Deep Generative Models
The ever-increasing size of modern data sets combined with the difficulty of obtaining label information has made semi-supervised learning one of the problems of significant practical importance in modern data analysis. We revisit the approach to semi-supervised learning with generative models and develop new models that allow for effective generalisation from small labelled data sets to large ...
متن کاملGeneralized Expectation Criteria for Semi-Supervised Learning with Weakly Labeled Data
In this paper, we present an overview of generalized expectation criteria (GE), a simple, robust, scalable method for semi-supervised training using weakly-labeled data. GE fits model parameters by favoring models that match certain expectation constraints, such as marginal label distributions, on the unlabeled data. This paper shows how to apply generalized expectation criteria to two classes ...
متن کاملWeakly Supervised Learning Algorithms and an Application to Electromyography
In the standard machine learning framework, training data is assumed to be fully supervised. However, collecting fully labelled data is not always easy. Due to cost, time, effort or other types of constraints, requiring the whole data to be labelled can be difficult in many applications, whereas collecting unlabelled data can be relatively easy. Therefore, paradigms that enable learning from un...
متن کاملProbabilistic Classification of Image Regions using Unsupervised and Supervised Learning
In generic image understanding applications, one of the goals is to interpret the semantic context of the scene (e.g., beach, office etc.). In this paper, we propose a probabilistic region classification scheme for natural scene images as a priming step for the problem of context interpretation. In conventional generative methods, a generative model is learnt for each class using all the availa...
